What does the word "play" mean to you?

What does the word "play" mean to you?

Following many years of prescriptive classical training, I now prioritize intuitive process-focused music making through free improvisation, experimental sound production, songwriting, teaching, and asking a lot of questions. With a curiosity for repurposing “junk” objects as instruments, my sonic palette is a mix of drumming, found sound instrument assembly, processed samples, and basically anything else. From my perspective, every object, person, and place has untapped musical potential, and this philosophy brings a sense of both compassion and humor to my practice. Parallel to this outlook is a persistent advocacy for mental health awareness that fundamentally characterizes my relationship with art. I firmly believes that music is one of the most elegant tools available for cultivating empathy, curiosity, and trust among humans.

Recently, my practice has included:

🫧Conceiving interdisciplinary music experiments as 1 half of the band Boio

👁️Researching art-play facilitation practices with regenerative designer Ana Vásquez

🎶Performing & recording with artists like Rose Blanshei, Roofers Union, Contemporaneous

🪞Working on converting my entire lifestyle from being right-hand-dominant to left-hand-dominant

🐎As a versatile percussionist, I have worked in a wide range of stylistic contexts. My professional percussion experiences have included playing in experimental rock bands, contemporary-classical music premieres, musical theater pit bands, modern & improv dance collaborations, free improvisation experiments, and a wide variety of western orchestral & chamber music from across the past 300+ years. I have performed in productions by The Park Avenue Armory, Lincoln Center, The LA Philharmonic, Found Sound Nation, Bang on a Can, Emergent Music Festival at Bryant Park, Contemporaneous, Beth Morrison Projects, Experiments in Opera, & more.

🦑Since Spring 2022, I have been employed at The New School’s College of Performing Arts as “Manager of Course Planning for Graduate Programs” where I support programs centered in interdisciplinary experimentation, music technology, and socially informed entrepreneurial strategies in the arts. In 2022, I was selected to participate in the OneBeat international residency project, which is an initiative of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with Found Sound Nation. Through experiences like these, I am continually exploring the role music has played in American education, media, and other intersectional socio-political landscapes.

⭐️I “hold” a masters degree from The New School, a bachelors degree from the University of Maryland, and a driver’s license from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles.
