HELLO I'm Robby and I'm a musician based in Brooklyn, NY. I like to create by playing drums + percussion, songwriting, improvising, and producing. I mainly play in two bands: Boio, a surrealist rock duo I started with my good friend Finnegan Shanahan, and Roofers Union. I also frequently play with projects like Contemporaneous, Alpenglow, Abbi Press, Goldfeather, and Echo Chamber, among other freelance gigs in the NY area. As a contemporary percussionist, I have worked with artists like John Corigliano, Martin Creed, So Percussion, Pascal Le Boeuf, Fjola Evans, Scott Wollschleger, and more. Some fancier rooms I’ve played in include Carnegie Hall, the Park Avenue Armory, Lincoln Center, National Sawdust, Elsewhere Hall, and EMPAC.
I am largely inspired by the work/lives of Meg White, David Lynch, Deerhoof, Marina Abromovic, David Hockney, Luigi Serafini, Pendleton Ward, Alex Da Corte, Bruce Springsteen, my sister Liz Bowen, my parents, my friends.
I went to school for classical percussion performance and learned how to play things like marimba and timpani. I have a Masters of Music from the Mannes conservatory at The New School and a B.M. from the University of Maryland. Between semesters, I completed fellowships at the Bang On A Can festival at Mass MoCA and the So Percussion Summer Institute. I also traveled to Ghana to study Ewe drumming and dance in the village of Kopeiya during the summer of 2012.
In addition to performing, I teach private drumset and percussion lessons. For more details, feel free to get in touch here. I would love to know you.
